SC relieves Big B of farm land case

Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan was relieved of the alleged farm land case with the Supreme court dismissing the petition filed by the UP gvernment.

The State government in its appeal to the SC challenged the Allahabad High Court's order after the HC dismissed the case on lack of evidence.

According to sources Bachachan has declared himself as a farmer inorder to acquire the land as the State would  allow only farmers to purchase agricultural land.

Sonia blames it on BSP

Congress president Sonia Gandhi has held the ruling BSP government responsible for ignoring the Dalits and backward classes in Uttar Pradesh.

The government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has given millions and millions of rupees to the Uttar Pradesh government but not enough has been done for the people. It is time to ask the Uttar Pradesh government to give an account of where this money was spent," said Sonia during the 2 day session of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee meeting in Kanpur.

She also pointed out that the Congress's own party leaders also had failed to revive the party in the country's most populous state.

A two day Congress meet will be held in Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh starting on Sunday.

The Congress Committee Convention in the State is believed to revive the Congress workers ahead of the upcoming general elections.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her son and Cong general secretary Rahul Gandhi will be taking part in the sessions which is expected to draw large crowds. Uttar Pradesh is seen as one of the prime state which represent the Lok Sabha polls with 80 seats.

Senior IAS official seeks VR

Senior Uttar Pradesh IAS official Neera Yada who was involved with controversies in connection with alleged land scam deals had sought for voluntary retirement.

She had given personal reasons for giving up the job saying she had enough with the controversies affecting her career.

Officially she is to retire on July 1 2008 and had opted to resign 3 months ahead. Neera is a UP cader of 1971 batch and has served as Chief Secretary during the Mulayam Singh Yadav govt.

SIMI going active

Even several years after the ban by the Indian govt on the radical organisation, Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), the group is still found active in Uttar Pradesh.

The group was formed in in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh in 1977 and the Indian govt has banned the group atleast three times.

The government still feels there is strong presence of SIMI activists operating in several parts of the country. 

There were several incidents of arrest of SIMI members and the recent arrest of 13 top leaders of the group in Madya Pradesh are all to support this.

UP celebrates festive season

Its been a festive season in Uttar Pradesh with a mix of religious festivals for all comunities.

For Hindus it was the festival of colors, Holi known as Chhoti Holi. Muslims marked the Prophet's birth anniversary, Eid-e-Milad  while Navroz for the Iranis and Parsis, and Good Friday followed by Easter on Sunday for the Christians.

It was a weeklong festive season for most people with singing, dancing and preparing sweets and colorful rangolis.

High security was put in place across the State with special squads in the sensitive regions. However the religious fevor was celebrated peacefully.

Police busts blood donor racket

Police officials in Uttar Pradesh has busted a blood donor racket who were using illicit methods to supply blood units to hospitals. A gang of 5 people were arrested in connection with this who were forcing people to donate blood on a frequent basis.
 
As many as 17 people, all of them labourers were forced to donate their blood in favor of small returns and they were kept captive in a house in Gorakhpur for over years.
 
The donor men were found very weak with low Hb levels and are undergoing treatment in hospital now. Police also working on details of various hospitals and private clinics in Gorakhpur and nearby districts where blood was being supplied by the gang.

Rahul Gandhi visit Chambal region

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has visited the Chambal region of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday where 5 members of a dalit family were allegedly killed by dacoits.

Mr Gandhi who visited the region met the surviving family members of the victims. Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee has announced Rs 2.5 lakh as compensation to the family members of the victims.

The tragic killing occured on tuesday as attackers dashed into the house of Dohre and gunned down him, his wife, son,daughter-in-law and another youth.

5 members of dalit family killed

In a yet another crime against Dalits, 5 members of a Dalit family in Ameenbad village in the Etawah district in Uttar Pradesh was killed on Thursday.
 
The victims including two women, were killed when the attackers opened gun fire against them in their house.
 
Though the actual reasons for the shooting attack are not known, police has stated land dispute as the reason. However the local people had denied this saying the family owned no land and were just labourers.

CBI probe over CD issue

On the wake of the controversial CD making rounds in Uttar Pradesh, the  state government has recommended a CBI inquiry into the whole incident.
 
There were reports that a CD titled 'Teesri Azadi' depicting epic characters as anti dallits were being circulated in parts of the state.
 
Following allegations against the CD and its makers there were strong criticism from opposition members who alleged BSP for making and distributing the CD. 
 
In view of this, the government has decided to recommend a CBI probe into the matter, informed Mayawati.

UP students stay away from exams

With view of the stringent measures carried out in the Board exams this year a large number of students in the State are reportedly staying away from the exams.
 
With the board exams that commenced on march 4th, around 1.41 lakh students are said to have missed the first days of exams so far.
 
This time around the educational department has gone tough to ensure that students do not attempt copying and unfair means during the exams. This has resulted in high drop out rates  in various examination centers across the State. In Balia alone atleast 2500 students did not appear for the exam.

Govt lifts ban of student union polls

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati on Wednesday lifted the ban on student union elections in colleges and universities in the state.
 
The ban was imposed by the Mayawati govt in Sept last year following students agitatation against the Lyngdoh committee recommendations for student body polls.
 
Announcing on the lifting of the ban in the Assembly, Mayawati maintained that the student union polls would now on be held in accordance with the Lyngdoh committee recommendations.

UP bans Jodhaa Akbar

UP government too has put the axe on the Ashutosh Gowarikar's epic film, Jodhaa Akbar. The screening of the controversial film Jodhaa Akbar starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai in lead roles have been banned in Uttar Pradesh.
 
The ban was imposed following protests by a group of Rajput community, Kshetriya Mahasabha claiming that the movie was violating historical facts which has hurt their religious sentiments.
 
The protestors even attacked a local cinema hall. The UP government has expressed concerns over the screening of the film and has stated that the ban was put on to maintain law and order in the State.

Cabinet Secretary puts down minister status

Amidst controversies Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar has put down his Cabinet minster's rank.
 
 Singh through a letter, made a request for being relieved of the responsibility of heading the secretariat administration and the status of Cabinet Minister rank. 
 
Chief Minister Mayawati has accepted the request of dropping his cabinet minister rank. However he will continue to be the Cabinet Secretary, said Mayawati. Singh being a non IAS cadre, there were strong objections from other parties for being offered a Cabinet Secretary post and cabinet minister status.
