Space sweeping machine

Akash Tewari, student of class X, Kendriya Vidyalaya of Kanpur, has invented a “space sweeping machine” which he has displayed in his space sweeper model, through which he claims, it would be possible for the scientists to clean the trash out of space. Akash claims that the hoper fitted in the model would compress the junk in the form of a capsule and would bring it back to earth and clear the junkyard in the space. This is just the first phase of his model now he is palnning to develop a technology to sent this trash to another orbit other than bringing it back it back to earth.

IIM-L to launch global MBA programme

Having begun its partnership with San Diego State University’s new MBA in global entrepreneurship, IIM-Lucknow (IIM-L) plans to launch its global MBA programme next year. For the MBA programme in Global Entrepreneurship, for which IIM-L will be partnering with SUDS CBA, students will travel across the world and spend 12 weeks at each campus in India, China and the Middle-East. The first class is scheduled to begin in ’07 fall.

Ash performs puja with Bachchans

Bollywood sensation Abhishek Bachchan and beauty queen-turned actress Aishwarya Rai took part in pujas along with his family at the Kashi Viswanath and Sankat Mochan Temples in Varanasi early Monday morning. Abhishek`s father and Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan, mother Jaya, sister Shweta Nanda, uncle Ajitabh and his daughter Namrata and Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh took part in the `mangla aarti` and `rudra abhishek` rituals at the ancient temples here. Incidentally, today is the 99th birthday of Bachchan`s father and noted Hindi poet Harivanshrai Bachchan.

Nanobiotechnologists to discuss new researches

LEADING SCIENTISTS of the country and a few from abroad are all set to gather at Allahabad University (AU) for a one-day international workshop on 'Frontiers in Nanobiotechnology'. Being organised by the Nanotechnology and Molecular Lab of AU's Centre of Biotechnology, the workshop will witness paper presentations and talks from teachers and scientists working at the interface of Nanotechnology and Biotechnology. At present, Nanobiotechnology is a field that concerns the utilisation of biological systems optimised through evolution, such as cells, cellular components, nucleic acids, and proteins, to fabricate functional nanostructured and mesoscopic architectures comprised of organic and inorganic materials.

Indoor cricket stadium coming up

Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association is all set to build an indoor cricket stadium to provide round the year practice facility to its players. UPCA will pump in Rs 3 crore to remodel the Kamla club stadium into an indoor infrastructure, equipped with all the latest technology. Special turf would be laid and arrangements would be made for installing flood lights so that practice matches could be played during night. The stadium would have a swimming pool and gallery as well. The work on the project would start shortly and the stadium would be fully developed by 2008.

Lucknow Mahotsav

The 10-day event will start off with shehnai recitals by the late maestro Bismillah Khan’s disciples and Kathak performance by Pandit Birju Maharaj. From ‘disco king’ Bappi Lahiri to Kajrare girl Alisha Chinoi, to the musical trio of Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy and the famous Kabir singer Shankar Sen, all of them are going to give a musical treat to the Lucknow audience.

UP govt set to hike central sales tax

The Uttar Pradesh government is all set to increase the rate of central sales tax (CST) on electronic components and finished goods from 2% to 4% which will have a negative impact on the manufacturers in the state as the cost of production will inflate by 2%. Consumer durable majors like Samsung and LG have production facilities in the state's Noida and Greater Noida region. Industry sources said that overall the UP state will get the sales turnover reduced because the raw material cost will increase and the buyer would also start to procure components from local sources since they will be getting the full value added tax (VAT) credit.

Mastermind behind Noida kidnapping arrested

The alleged mastermind behind the kidnapping of Adobe executive Naresh Gupta's three-year-old son Anant who was released on payment of a ransom of Rs. 50 lakhs on Friday, was arrested at Noida on Saturday. Chhatrapal and his accomplice Pawan had conspired to kidnap Anant. After the first failed attempt on November 10, the accused struck again on November 13 morning kidnapping Anant when he was waiting for his school bus near his house.

NASA scientists worried about the pollution in Kanpur

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) scientists have expressed concern over the increasing level of pollution in the atmosphere during a two-day workshop on 'Increasing Pollution in Ganga River Basin' held at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kanpur recently. The scientists were here to study the nature of aerosol (dust particles present in the atmosphere) and to develop a method for collecting relevant data for aeronautic observations. The scientists also said that if the pollution levels are not checked, the increasing dust particles would take a toll on the health of mankind, as well as crops, besides altering weather patterns. Kanpur and Lucknow are among the ten most polluted Asian cities, according to a recent survey.

Protests In Uttar Pradesh over Abishek

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav's decision to honour actor Abhishek Bachchan with the state's highest cultural honour-Yash Bharti-has evoked sharp protests from political parties , cultural groups and students. Abhishek,who will be presented the 500,000 award in Lucknow on Monday , is the fourth member of the Bachchan family to get it . Mulayam Singh has already honoured his grandfather , the late Harivansh Rai Bachchan , and his actor parents Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan. Some students termed it as "advance quid pro quo" towards future participation of the Bachchans in the Samajwadi Party election campaign during the assembly polls next year specially in view of the recent drubbing in the civic polls.

New method to predict yield

Indian scientists have developed a mathematical equation that they say can be used to forecast near-accurate crop yield. They claim their generic equation can predict the state-wise crop yield with better than 90 percent accuracy and help calculate crop yields in other countries as well. The researchers—Ramesh Singh, Anup Prasad and Vinod Tare of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur along with US researcher Menas Kafatos have used long-term satellite and meteorological data for their equation. For India, the “yield equation” has been developed for rice and wheat. The yields predicted by their model were close to the observed values for the years 1997, 1998 and 1999.

IIT-K, HAL sign MoU

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (Lucknow) and Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur would work jointly for developing an aircraft system cell at the IIT premises. HAL would provide Rs 10 lakh to IIT for setting up the cell under the agreement. Under the agreement both the institutions would work for manufacturing aircrafts with totally indigenous technology. The duo also decided to set up a joint committee for the aircrafts technology system cell, which would include technical experts of HAL from Lucknow, Korba, Kanpur and Hyderabad units.

Jail bharo agitation

Buoyed by its performance in the Uttar Pradesh local bodies elections, the Congress will launch a jail bharo agitation from November 20 against the Mulayam Singh Yadav regime. This would be followed by a gherao of Lucknow on November 27. The jail bharo call had been given by the Congress president and United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi at her Rae Bareilly rally on September 20. The party will also raise the alleged poll irregularities and booth capturing by Samajwadi Party workers in the Vidhan Sabha on Friday. Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Salman Khurshid said the jail bharo agitation would continue till November 24 and would be divided into four phases. Each day, Congressmen in two zones or sectors would participate in the jail bharo stir.

Lucknow ‘scientoonist’ to help Africa raise its living standards

Pradeep Srivastava, a city based scientist, populary known as the father of scientoon, has been invited by international agencies to raise the standards of living of the people of Africa. Srivastava introduced scientoon, a new branch of Science that deals with effective science communication by using a novel class of science cartoons called Scientoons. These Scientoons would, for the first time, be used to spread awareness about diseases and its preventions for the general masses.

BJP won the UP local polls

The massive victory posted by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday in the Uttar Pradesh local bodies polls has rekindled the party's hope of revival in the state ahead of assembly elections early next year. The BJP has won despite efforts by the Mulayam Singh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party government to subvert the election process. The victory has also strengthened Rajnath Singh's position as party chief as he hails from Uttar Pradesh. The BJP has won mayoral polls in Ghaziabad, Agra, Varanasi, Aligarh, Gorakhpur, Meerut, Kanpur and Lucknow in the local bodies polls.

Umrao Jaan leaves Lucknow

On its release on Friday, not only in Lucknow, the film failed to jingle cash registers throughout the UP territory, the largest and considered, financially, the most crucial for Bollywood releases. Most viewers, he said, emerged disappointed and complained of the film being too long (a full three hours). Umrao Jaan’ had courted a lot of pre-release controversy as several prominent Lucknowites and Maulanas took umbrage to the producer JP Dutta’s comments on Lucknow. They had criticised the film saying its music, costumes and ambience did not reflect Lucknawi culture.

Uttar Pradesh civil polls

The second round of polling of the three-phased civic elections in Uttar Pradesh, recorded violence between rival political groups. Arson and firing was reported from at least half a dozen districts where about 20 people had suffered injuries and were hospitalised. The other violence-hit districts were Varanasi, Agra and Kanpur where sporadic violence and arson disrupted polling for some time during the day. Minor clashes and exchange of brickbats were witnessed in Lucknow, Jhansi and a few other places as well. The key contestants in most places were nominees of the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) had decided not to formally enter the fray and supported independent candidates in certain places.

Bangkok-Gaya-Varanasi service

In a bid to promote Buddhist circuit tourism, Thai Airways launched its Bangkok-Gaya-Varanasi tri-weekly service. The airline's inaugural flight carrying 125 passengers touched down at the international airport in Gaya, about 15 km from Bodh Gaya, the highest seat of the Buddhism. The airliner will run the service every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

City development plan okayed

Centre's nod for Lucknow city development plan (CDP)', under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM), has cleared the decks for the state government to seek central funding on project proposals. Lucknow is among the 33 cities whose CDPs have been approved in the first phase. In total 63 cities had sent their CDPs. Out of the remaining 30, 11 are under appraisal while 19 are still being prepared. The sites proposed under the scheme are Gomtinagar water works, Mohan Road water works, Ghaila water works, Balaganj water works. Besides, new water works would be installed in other areas of the state capital too.

Bachchan in Varanasi for ad film

Lucknow teams dominate in T-T, B’minton

Lucknow teams dominated the proceedings in table tennis and badminton while a Pakistan team claimed a gold in athletics on the penultimate day of the International Sports Olympiad ‘EXSPO-2006’ in Lucknow. In soccer, Kanchenjunga School, Nepal B Team beat Kanchenjunga School, Nepal A-Team and bagged the gold in an exciting final match. The final between the two Kanchenchunga teams went to the tie-breaker stage in which the B-team emerged winner by a 6-5 difference.
