Uttar Pradesh News Archive: March 2006JE vaccine cleared from IMAFriday, March 31, 2006 | AYThough the live attenuated Japanese Encephalitis (JE) vaccine has got clearance from the Indian Council of Medical Research, it appears that the Union ministry of health and family welfare is still not cent per cent confident about the vaccine. Known as JE SA 14-14-2, the vaccine will have to clear a 'litmus test' by the Sanjay Gandhi Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI). Under this, SGPGI will collect more than six lakh samples to test the efficacy and antibody level of the vaccine. The blood sample collection for the four-year-long study, will begin seven weeks after the administration of the doses, which tentatively will be in the first week of July. The study will cover around 6-12 lakh children between the age group of 0-15 years. The maximum number of samples will be collected from children ranging between 0-2 years. The multi-phased JE vaccination programme has identified the five districts of Gorakhpur, Maharajganj, Deoria, Lakhimpur Kheri and Kushinagar in UP. Scientists develop RobotsFriday, March 31, 2006 | AYScientists at the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K), have developed three different robot models which can emulate human motions and think like a human being. Not only this, their muscles would closest to that of a human. The aim of the innovation was to make use of robots in social applications. Such models had already been developed abroad including in Japan where the human-friendly Sony Dog model is very popular. The three major research areas taken up in the project were: Emulating human motion, intelligence and developing artificial muscles. Human fingertip contains several sensors that are responsible for providing sensation of touch, pressure, force, slip etc. That is required to dexterously control manipulation. Country’s first 18-volume Sanskrit encyclopaediaSaturday, March 25, 2006 | AYThe Uttar Pradesh Sanskrit Sansthanam is all set to publish for the first time in India an 18-volume Sanskrit Vangmay, an encyclopaedia of sorts containing literature, grammar and vocabulary of the language. The Sansthanam has now received a grant of Rs 6 lakh from the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development to publish three more volumes during the ongoing financial year. This Vangmay is the first of its kind in the country, and it is an honour for the Sansthanam to be the only Sanskrit language institute in the country to publish. The volumes to be published now include those based on the Puranas, Jyotish (astrology), Ayurveda and Sangeet Shastra (music). Turmeric soon to be a remedy for MalariaFriday, March 24, 2006 | AYHaldi (turmeric) is set to become the main ingredient of a new-generation anti-malaria drug. With human trials to start in a few weeks, the drug, if proved successful, will be the most effective and cheapest cure for malaria. Curcumin, the pure compound in turmeric when combined with Artmisinin (a Chinese drug) has shown no resistance and no side effects in animal trials. Malaria infects about 2.5 million people in India every year and it is increasingly becoming resistant to commonly used drugs. Fire destroys property worth 40 lakhFriday, March 24, 2006 | AYA fire broke out in a battery factory in Fazalganj industrial area here damaging property worth Rs 40 lakh but no one was reported to be injured in the blaze. The fire, said to the result of a burst boiler, engulfed the entire factory around midnight. Besides readymade stock machinery, property worth 40 lakh rupees were damaged in the flames. LU students oppose merit based admission systemWednesday, March 22, 2006 | AYStudent leaders of Lucknow University (LU) have started opposing the merit-based admission system to the UG level. The student leaders contend that in this the situation, the students of UP Board will be a loser. They feel that since marking pattern of CBSE and ICSE boards are quite liberal, students passing out from these boards will score higher marks and will have an advantage over the passouts of UP Board. According to student leaders even the normalization formula which the varsity evolves during the admission process fails to save the interests of the UP Board examinees and they lose out to students of other Boards. Impressed by the storyline, lyrics and music of a Bhojpuri film, ace singer Asha Bhosle has agreed to lend her voice for a Bhojpuri film. It is believed that she had sung for Jivaant Films Internationals ‘Nehiya Sanehiya’ 20 years ago. The song has been composed and produced by Kunwar Ram Singh who is the prince of Jagdishpur in Uttar Pradesh. The film is a social drama directed by Ravindra Verma, which stars Rajeev Mishra and Almaas Khan. Lyrics have been written by Parashuram Prasad Kesri, Anjani Upadhyay and Kunwar Sultan Puri. House tax collection easierTuesday, March 21, 2006 | AYThe Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) plans to start computerised house tax collection in Aliganj, Mahanagar, Kapoorthala and Indiranagar. As a result, residents of these areas would have to merely inform the attending clerk at respective zonal offices about the house ID number — to be provided by the LMC soon. A click of the mouse would inform the house tax on that particular house and the receipt too would be generated by the computer. Fuel adulteration would be checked efefctively and proper waste disposal would be ensured in the industries situated in the urban areas. To make the Gomti river pollution-free, a 'Gomti Action Plan' was underway with the help of the Centre under which two new sewerage treatment plants would be established in the city. A new invention to facilitate treatment in spondylitisSaturday, March 18, 2006 | AYA breakthrough in spinal treatment has been achieved by developing a device to facilitate keyhole surgery for cervical spondylitis and disk prolapse. Ravi Dev, a young associate professor in the department of neurosurgery at King George's Medical University (KGMU), has developed a unique vertebral drill which facilitates a small hole near the neck to correct a prolapsed disk or provide relief to a patient of acute spondylitis. In both spondylitis and prolapsed disk, it is the compression of the disk that leads to pressure on nerves or the spinal chord and hence causes pain to the patient. This new technique will help to clear that compression without wide incisions or deep invasion. A cap fitted at the far end of the drill prevents drilling beyond the required measure and therefore minimises the chances of any complications often associated with the conventional Cloward technique. Mrs. Bachchan disqualified as MPSaturday, March 18, 2006 | AYJaya Bachchan has been disqualified as MP on the ground that she was holding an office of profit after the President accepted the Election Commission's recommendations. The President's decision will be notified in the Gazette and the Commission will have to hold a by-election to the vacancy arising out of her disqualification. A Congress leader from Uttar Pradesh Madan Mohan had filed the disqualification petition against Bachchan on the ground that as Chairperson of the State Film Development Council she held an office of profit and attracted punitive provisions of the Constitution in this regard. Bachchan has also filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the EC recommendation and sought its views on what constituted an office of profit. Electromediation- A new technology by IIT-KThursday, March 16, 2006 | AYIndian Institute of Technology (IIT-K) scientists have developed a new cost-effective technology for cleaning soil that has been contaminated by deadly metals like chromium, lead, distillery effluents, phospho-gypsum iron and zinc. The new technology is called ‘Electromediation’, in which a DC electric field is applied across electrode pairs placed in the ground. The contaminants in the liquid phase in the soil are moved out under the action of the field to electrode wells where they are then pumped out. Over the years, industrial waste has been dumped indiscriminately, without treating it through proper waste-management techniques, which kept on contaminating the soil and causing degradation. Bhojpuri albums doing wellWednesday, March 15, 2006 | AYBhojpuri albums have grown in demand in the music shops. Earlier, the regional songs were confined to parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Holi colours can prove to be harmfulTuesday, March 14, 2006 | AYA majority of colours used in Holi are made up of synthetic dyes of non-food grade items such as textiles, paper and leather. Mukul Das, deputy director of the Lucknow-based Industrial Toxicology Research Centre, says that harmful chemicals which includes rhodamina (pink/red), melachite (green), methylviolet (violet), orange II (orange) and auramine (yellow)are used to prepare colours. Das says these colours contain traces of lead and cadmium and scientific tests have verified they cause skin abrasions, skin and eye irritations, allergies and even asthma. The National Botanical Research Institute has developed `herbal gulal' technology, which is eco-friendly natural dye and is available in all colours. Das said the ritual of playing with wet colours in Holi has a scientific reason attached to it. During Holi time the atmosphere allows the growth of micro-organisms. The natural Holi colours that are photo sensitizers kill become active under sunlight and kill those organisms. The synthetic colours, though photo sensitisers, are toxic. Assembly passes appropriation billMonday, March 13, 2006 | AYUttar Pradesh vidhan sabha on Saturday passed by voice-vote the state appropriation bill of a little over Rs 90,372 crore for the financial year 2006-07. With its passage, the budgetary proposals for the year 2006-07 were also passed by the House. The budgetary proposals were tabled in the House by Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, who also holds the finance portfolio, on February 15. Highest paid salary bagged by a Kanpur graduateSunday, March 12, 2006 | AYThe Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, (IIM-B) has created history in campus placements. Kanpur IIT graduate Gaurav Agarwal of IIM-B's Class of 2006 bagged the highest job offer from Barclays Capital, London, during final placements. His salary, $1,93,000, or Rs 86.85 lakh, per annum. That's Rs 7.24 lakh per month. He is the highest paid graduate across any of the IIMs this year. The highest job offer at IIMAhmedabad was $1,85,000. Investment banking majors flew down from different parts of the globe to pick IIM-B students. They are Goldman Sachs, BNP Paribas, Barclays Capital, Merrill Lynch, Lehman Brothers, Deutsche Bank, ABN Amro, UBS, JP Morgan and HSBC. Today in this city of 30-35 lakh people there may be hardly 15-20 hakeems and only a few shops selling Unani medicines and herbal singles and compounds. They were so expert that simply by feeling the pulse and seeing the ‘Qaaroora’ (first urine of the day) they fully understood the ailment of the patient without any thing being told by him. Hakeems of olden days considered their profession for the sake of service. They of course charged their fees and sold medicines also but they prescribed cheaper medicines also to their patients. Blasts in Varanasi took the lives of 20Wednesday, March 8, 2006 | AYTwo blasts in quick succession rocked Sankatmochan temple and the Varanasi Cantonment railway station last evening, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 50, some of them seriously. Bomb disposal squad personnel helped avert a third at Dashashwamedh Ghat, two km off Kashi Vishwanath temple, where four bombs were found and subsequently defused. Soon after the blasts, police were put on high alert in several parts of the country and security was beefed up at places of worship, vital installations and government buildings. Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who is monitoring the situation, condemned the blasts and appealed to the people to remain calm. President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam made a similar plea. Dr Singh also spoke to the state chief minister, Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav. Meera, who starred in the Bollywood film Nazar, said some friends had told her about the flourishing Bhojpuri film industry and its popularity. Bhojpuri is a dialect of Hindi spoken mostly in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The four-decade-old Bhojpuri film industry has been attracting foreign talent since last year. High level committee investigates Lucknow clashesSunday, March 5, 2006 | AYThe UP govt has set up a two-member committee to look into Friday's communal clashes in Lucknow, that left four people dead and 25 others injured. Clashes had broken out between the Muslims and the Khatik community during the protests against the visit of US President George W Bush. It will also determine if the police was lax in handling the situation, fix responsibility, and suggest possible corrective measures. The city is under strict police protection, with 20 companies of Provincial Armed Constabulory, four companies of the Rapid Action Force and over 1,000 constables of the Uttar Pradesh Police spreading out to ensure that no fresh violence breaks out. Nutritious wine developed by Lucknow scientistSaturday, March 4, 2006 | AYCentral Institute for Subtropical Horticulture (CISH)-Lucknow, has developed wines from guava, mango, bael, amla and mahua. Scientists here claimed this is the first time in the country that wine is being prepared with nutritional content of the fruits intact. Explaining the fermentation technique, the scientists said after extracting the juice from fruits, some chemicals are added to destroy the unwanted microbes, after which some fungus are added into it. This, they added, is the most important stage of the process as it has to be performed in aseptic conditions to take care of the hygiene factor. Against the usual two months to process normal wine, scientists said extracting this nutritious wine will take about six months. The older the wine gets, the more nutritious it becomes as the antioxidants derived from the fruits are stabilsed in the drinks. CISH scientists said they have also mixed some additives to the new wine so that the drinks become more transparent and give a sweet smell. As for the production cost, a 200-ml bottle comes to about Rs 30. Nehiyan Sanehiya- Shooting in LucknowSaturday, March 4, 2006 | AYThe crew of Bhojpuri movie 'Nehiyan Sanehiya' has moved to Lucknow from Mumbai and has been hunting locations in and around the city of Nawabs to commence the shooting of the film from March 17. The film, dealing with issues like dowry, liquor abuse and social reform, is based on a true story and will be shot extensively in and around Lucknow. The music for the film has been composed by Kewal Kumar, while noted playback singers - Kumar Sanu, Sadhana Sargam, Richa Sharma and Alka Yagnik have already recorded five songs in their voice. Protest among people in UPSaturday, March 4, 2006 | AYFollowing violence that erupted on Friday during anti-Bush demonstrations with protestors fighting pitched battles with shopkeepers and police in several areas of the city, two persons were killed and more than 10 injured. The injured were admitted to KGMU Trauma Centre and Balrampur Hospital. The processionists, who were protesting the visit of US President George W Bush, damaged shops and vehicles in stone-pelting and set several two-wheelers ablaze in various parts of the city. The trouble erupted after the protestors attended Friday prayers and marched through the streets of the city trying force closure of shops which was opposed by the locals. All the main markets in the city have closed down following the incident. UP state games from March1Wednesday, March 1, 2006 | AYThe fourth phase of Uttar Pradesh State Games will be held here from March 1 to 5. The events would be held at the K D Singh Babu Stadium, Guru Gobind Singh Sports College and the banks of the Gomti River. The events included Taekwando, Fencing, Weight Lifting, Rowing, Cannoing, Triathalone (Men and Women), Kho Kho, Wrestling, Volleyball, Handball and Boxing (Women).
