Intelligent arthroplasty

A workshop named ‘Intelligent arthroplasty and computer-assisted surgery’ is being organsied by the Vivekananda Polyclinic in collaboration with Lucknow Orthopedic Club. Stressing that with minimal incision the recovery is faster, the experts said it also increases the longevity of the replaced joint. With this method, the cuts in the bone can be made using computer navigation and help achieve almost 100 per cent accuracy, it was stated. Dr S J Yeo, one of the pioneers of computer-assisted arthroplasty in a leading hospital in Singapore, shared his experiences and latest advances with the orthopaedic surgeons participating in the workshop.

KG medical students protest

Students and junior doctors of a medical college in Lucknow said they will wear black badges to register their protest against the proposed move to reserve seats for OBCs in central educational institutions of the country. The protest was symbolic and would not hit the health services of the hospital, the students and junior doctors of the K G Medical University said.

UP organizes fair in France

Uttar Pradesh government is organizing a 11-day long trade fair in Paris. The exhibition will showcase the state's handicrafts and exploit the trade potential in international market. Renowned chikan and zari craftsmen would display their award-winning goods in the trade fair, state government sources said, adding that silk goods and jewellery items would also be on display.

There has been a general feeling that the only way of reviving the Congress party or to make it an effective player on the national scene is to revive itself in the Hindi belt particularly in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The UP politics at the moment is undergoing a churning with two major players that is Mr Mulayam Singh and Ms Mayawati looking for new vote banks to enlarge their vote base. In such a situation Mr Rahul Gandhi certainly will find a ready audience to hear him and also look at him as an alternative in a state which because of misgovernance has been fast slipping into despair with not development, poor law and order and a society which is getting sharply divided on caste basis.

Uttar Pradesh won the National hockey championship

Uttar Pradesh emerged winner of the 12th DNR sub-junior National hockey championship defeating Haryana 2-0 in the final. Undeterred, Haryana, playing its first sub-junior National final, made several attempts to penetrate the formidable Uttar Pradesh defence, but in vain. At half-time, Uttar Pradesh led 1-0. The second-half witnessed Uttar Pradesh coming out with all guns blazing with the wingers feeding their frontline with determination.

MTV India is all set to kick off a new series of its annual property, MTV Youth Icon. MTV has planned youth-connect initiatives through mall activation programme across Delhi, Kolkata and Ahmedabad, where its VJs would visit select malls in these cities and engage audiences in thematic games and activities. This year's nominees for the MTV Youth Icon 2006 include, cricketer M.S. Dhoni, television personality Navjot Singh Siddhu, Dr Vijay Mallya, President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, actor John Abraham and singer Abhijeet Sawant. The event will conclude in June with the announcement of the Pepsi & MTV Youth Icon for 2006.

New hotel policy

The Uttar Pradesh Government has announced full "Luxury tax Rebate" for companies setting up projects in the state. The Hotel Policy is important because during the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, 30,000 additional rooms would be required in and around Delhi. Out of this, UP will have to provide for 5,000 rooms in Ghaziabad, Noida and Greater Noida areas. He also announced industry status for the Tourism industry to boost the sector which attracts a large number of tourists -- both domestic as well as foreign.

Rajnath begins 2nd leg of yatra

BJP president Rajnath Singh would start on the second phase of his 'bharat suraksha' yatra from the temple city tomorrow in the politically-crucial state of Uttar Pradesh. Singh, would highlight the "misrule" of the UPA government and would address a public meeting in the city later in the day before leaving on April 19 via Varanasi, Chandauli, Bhadohi, Mirzapur to Allahabad. State party president Keshari Nath Tripathi, former chief minister Kalyan Singh, party general secretary Vinay Katiyar and a host of MPs, MLAs and other leaders are camping in the city to make their party president's tour a success.

Kurien is chancellor of the University of Allahabad

Verghese Kurien, former chairman of National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), has been appointed as the chancellor of the University of Allahabad for a term of five years with immediate effect from April 17, 2006. The post of chancellor of the University of Allahabad was created for the first time which means Kurien will be the first chancellor of the university. As per the norms, governors are only eligible for chancellor of the university. The memo was signed by S S Mahlawat, under Secretary to the Government of India.

Delhi-Noida metro rail corridor soon to be operational

The much-awaited Delhi-Noida metro rail corridor is expected to be functional by June 2009. Owing to continued efforts of the UP government, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has agreed on linking Noida and Delhi through metrol rail route by June 2009. For the last two years, efforts were underway to clear the way for extending the Delhi Metro Rail to Noida and meetings between the Planning Commission, Uttar Pradesh government, DMRC, RITES and other departments concerned had repeatedly taken place in this regard. The seven km stretch, between New Ashok Vihar and Noida, was likely to cost Rs 736 crore. A total of six stations are proposed on the Noida-Delhi corridor including Noida Sector 15, Sector 13, Sector 18, National Botanical Garden, Noida Golf Course and the Noida City Center 32. The train will run over ground in the new corridor.

Satish Kaushik plans to make a film on India's "living dead" - people who are alive but are shown as dead in government records. In Uttar Pradesh, thousands of people have been declared dead by their relatives who want to collect their insurance policies or seize their property. The gains are often shared with the unscrupulous officials who collude with them. It is up to the people officially declared "dead" to prove that they are living. The film's story is inspired by the life of Lal Bihari, who was declared dead but fought greedy relatives and dishonest officials for 18 years before he successfully proved that he was alive. Bihari has since formed an association to help those who are declared dead to change official records and win back their status as living.

Fire broke out at a fair in Meerut

51 people were killed and more than 100 wounded in a fire that broke out Monday evening at a crowded business fair held in a public park in the city of Meerut. People in Meerut blamed the administration for a lack of safety measures at the electronics goods fair, where some 2,000 people were gathered when the fire broke out on Monday. Witnesses and officials said a short-circuit caused the fire, which spread rapidly to polythene sheets covering a temporary enclosure where air conditioners, television sets and other home appliances were on display. Police said they had found 51 bodies, but residents and a local politician said the toll was likely to be much higher.

UP boys attracted to sports college

The UP factor in Team India has local boys crowding in for admission at the selection trials of Guru Goind Singh Sports College, Lucknow. Against the figure of 600 to 700 boys appearing for the cricket trials in the previous years, 1700 turned up for trials this year. Inspired by rising Team India star Rudra Pratap Singh, the boys from Rae Bareli have also come in large numbers to try their luck. The rush at the Sports College was such that the trials which were supposed to be held on April 7 and 8, had to be extended to Sunday as well.

Elite business school students protested against the Central government's announcement to reserve 49.5 per cent of seats in the country's top management and engineering schools for reserved categories of population. In the latest move the government plans to reserve 27 percent seats in IIMs and IITs and other federal universities over an above the existing quotas taking the total reservation to almost 50 percent, which means lesser number of seats for students appearing in the general category. Students at these prestigious colleges, like the India Institute of Management (IIM), the country's top B School say with reservations coming again they have no other option but to leave and apply in foreign colleges.

Lalji Tandon detained at Railway Station

Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Lalji Tandon was detained at the Kanpur Central Railway Station and sent back to Lucknow this morning. He was traveling by the Gomti Express on way to riot- affected Aligarh. A team headed by SP (city) Sabha Raj and ADM (city) Abrar Ahmed asked the BJP leader to cut short his visit at Kanpur itself. The officers explained to him that his presence could vitiate the atmosphere in Aligarh and therefore he would not be allowed to proceed any further. The BJP leader left the AC coach without any protest and silently joined officials in the GRP waiting room.

Lucknow makes a good impression

A two-day conference on ‘Vision Lucknow’, was organised by Club of Lucknow at the auditorium of PICUP. Director of IIM Lucknow, said Lucknow was not as backward as being communicated. The good things about any city were its style, modernity, good infrastructure and heritage, apart from civic amenities, a great museum and art gallery. And Lucknow possesed them all. He added that there was a need for proper public and private partnership to invite people and companies to invest in the state, as the city indeed possesed the potential to grow as a big industrial city with global linkages.

UP board cancels two exam papers

Uttar Pradesh Secondary Education Board, Allahabad ordered the cancellation of the first shift examination of Baba Thakur Das Inter College that was conducted on March 28. Earlier, the district administration had recommended the cancellation of the Mathematics High School examination paper at the centre that was conducted on March 28. The DIOS office informed that the re-examination for the cancelled papers will be conducted on April 12 in the first shift at the Rajkiya Husainabad Inter College.

Anti theft device for mobiles

Cellphones being stolen, snatched or forgotten is a common problem we face today. Two students of the Kanpur Indian Institute of Technology’s design department have come up with an anti-theft device for cellphones. The result of their efforts was a compact anti-theft device, which can be attached to the mobile phone and carried in the pocket. The connecting wire is disguised to look like a neckband, and the device itself looks like a pen from outside. When a thief tries to flick the mobile phone from your pocket or handbag, the plug gets detached from the unit’s socket and activates a loud alarm. The device weighs less than 300 grams. The prototype was prepared for around Rs 500, but now the device can be made within the range of Rs 150 to 250.

PVR rises high

Multiplex major PVR hit an all-time high of Rs 337 and jumped 5.05 per cent to Rs 307.65 after its multiplexes at Indore and Lucknow got the cinema operating licenses. 1.81 lakh shares were traded on the BSE as against average 29,000 shares. From Rs 254.35 on February 3, the scrips rallied to Rs 298.40 on February 17. The scrip has remained rangebound since then. It ended at Rs 292.85 on March 30. PVR has been granted cinema operating licences at Indore (for 5 screens) and at Lucknow (for 4 screens). It is intending to start commercial operations at these multiplexes from April 6.

Lucknow radio bags award

All India Radio, Lucknow, added two more awards to its collection at the Akashwani Annual Awards this year. AIR Lucknow has created a record of sorts by winning these awards. It won an award in the innovative category for its audio cartoon- Shabash Bunty. Shabash Bunty was a battle between junk food and healthy food, and both tried to woo Bunty to gorge them. The story was written by Dr Arvind Dubey and Anwarul Hasan and produced by Meenu Khare. The second award has been given in the family welfare category for Abhiprayas- based on the life of HIV/AIDS positive people. This too was produced by Khare.

UP focussing on IT usage in the state

The UP government announced its partnership with Microsoft Corporation India to help increase IT knowledge in the state. While inviting IT giants including Microsoft and Intel to set up software parks or townships under Lucknow Industrial Development Authority (LIDA), Amar Singh, UP Development Council (UPDC) Chairman and ruling Samajwadi Party National General Secretary, said that he will consider it an achievement for UP government only when IT companies start taking interest particularly in Lucknow and Kanpur. Microsoft in association with chip maker Intel has also announced a multi-dimensional partnership with the UP government to help accelerate IT usage in the state. The strategic areas identified for the partnership include, joint efforts for delivering affordable personal computer (PC) options, ushering in e-governance, accelerating IT literacy and enabling access to technology in UP rural areas.

Kanpur will witness a bright starry night
